Trip DoctorFAQs

TripDoctor is an online platform that connects sick and injured international travelers with local physicians and healthcare organizations that provide non-emergency healthcare services through video consults, house calls, and priority clinic visits. TripDoctor helps travelers find a doctor, overcome language barriers, avoid long wait times, and assure safety, quality and price transparency.
A list of available cities can be found on TripDoctor’s homepage. When you click on a city or search by a specific location, you are able to see what services are being offered in that location.
TripDoctor’s website is available 24/7. Local physicians are typically availabile between 8AM – 8PM local time, with some physicians also having early morning and late-night appointments available. Our customer concierge support is available from 8AM – 8PM EST.
Local physicians who have signed up with the TripDoctor platform are licensed and in good standing with the applicable local licensing agencies. TripDoctor performs thorough background checks and interviews with all physicians signing up for our platform. In addition, we provide all physicians additional training and resources to best serve our users. Many of the physicians are currently working for local healthcare organizations and have a great deal of experience working with foreign patients.
TripDoctor’s platform enables you to see a doctor via a video consult, an in-person house call to your room, or a priority visit to a local clinic or hospital.
During a video consult, you will connect your mobile device or computer with doctor using TripDoctor’s video chat platform.
Doctors are able to diagnose and provide treatment plans for many of the most common travel related illnesses. Doctors can also provide prescriptions when necessary and if legally permitted. Doctors can also make recommendations to follow-up if needed. Many of the doctors that provide video consults can also follow-up with a house call or priority clinic visit. Video consults can be scheduled in advance or via on-demand request to queue up with the next available doctor.
During a house call, the selected doctor will visit your hotel room or residence at the designated appointment time. Please ensure that they have access to your residence (e.g., front desk, door man, security gate). Doctors are able to diagnose and provide treatment plans for many of the most common travel related illnesses. Doctors are able to treat many additional conditions that video consults may not cover such as minor cuts and wounds, sprains and strains, dehydration. Doctors can also provide prescriptions when necessary and if legally permitted. Some doctors may also come with additional medications, treatments, and resources for additional laboratory testing. Read the doctor's profile for details on what is included in a house call .
Our customer concierge support is available from 8AM – 8PM EST in most areas. You can reach them via the chat button on the bottom right of our website or by calling 1 800 284 9678
We take your privacy very seriously. Confidentiality is a core principle of TripDoctor’s mission. We strive to meet and exceed the standards outlined in privacy and medical record laws and regulations wherever we operate. You can view our privacy policy and terms of service here.

Video visits can be carried out on mobile devices or a computer. Minimum requirements for video conferencing are:

  1. Windows®7, Vista, or XP

  2. A Mac running OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or superior.

  3. Highspeed internet connection

  4. A webcam with at least 1.3 megapixels

  5. Microphone (most webcams already have microphone built in)

  6. After you set up an account, you will be able to use a simple online simulation to test your configuration and check if you are ready for a virtual consultation.

Although we recommend the use of WIFI or ethernet for the best possible experience, it is not required. Our web-based video consult interface is designed with the limited connectivity of international cellular service in mind and can work on LTE, 4G or 3G, provided you have a stable connection. If you experience connection issues during your appointment, you can simply switch to audio-only which should improve your audio connection.
Yes, TripDoctor can be accessed on most mobile devices with an Internet connection using the web browser on your device. TripDoctor is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge.
TripDoctor offers two ways to make a video consult. Select an on-demand video consult to speak to the next available doctor. Choose a scheduled video consult to choose your doctor and pick a future appointment time from their available schedule.
With scheduled video consults you can choose your doctor based on their availability, customer rating, institutional affiliation, specialties, or gender. With on-demand video consults you do not get to choose your doctor, but you are seen sooner by the next available doctor.
Just like a normal doctor visit, most patients do not need to do much to prepare for a video consult. All patients should be on time, be able to state their symptoms and when these started. In addition, you should be sure that your profile lists all your medical conditions and any medications you are taking. If you have a symptom that can be photographed, such as a rash, wound or sunburn, you should take pictures of it before your appointment so that you can upload them for the doctor to see.
For patients under 18, only the patient’s parent or legal guardian is authorized to make an appointment.
Before starting a video consult, TripDoctor has a simple consent form that must be electronically approved. This is to ensure that you and the doctor are both clear on your willingness to receive treatment. For house calls and priority clinic visits, the physician and/or healthcare organization may have additional consent forms to be signed.
If your doctor finds that your condition requires an in-person appointment to diagnose or treat, you may request an in-person house call or priority clinic visit with the same provider or another available provider. If you require a house call or priority clinic visit after a video consult, TripDoctor will apply the cost of your video consult toward the cost of your in-person visit, effectively refunding you for your initial video consult.
You can request a follow-up appointment with your previous doctor in your My Consults tab or by contacting our customer concierge. Your doctor also has the ability to send you a request for a follow-up appointment via video consult, house call, or priority clinic visit, if he or she thinks it is a necessary part of treatment. You may schedule at new appointment with any doctor at any time.
Because TripDoctor serves travelers away from home, we do not offer recurring appointment scheduling, only follow-up visits as indicated.
The majority of video consults are finished in under 15 minutes. If your appointment is close to 15 minutes, you will see a countdown clock appear. If your doctor needs more time to diagnose and treat you, the doctor may choose to extend the visit.
If needed, TripDoctor customer concierge team may reach out to you for follow-up via email. However, given privacy concerns, any medically sensitive information must be communicated over our website's secure messaging center or by phone call.
If you are staying in a hotel or a building with security at the entrance, please let them know that the doctor is coming to see you. In addition, you will need to be able to let the doctor into your room. All patients should be available on time, be able to state their symptoms and when these started. Be sure that your profile lists all your medical conditions and all of the medications you are taking.
A priority clinic visit is an appointment at a participating clinic or hospital where the facility provides a prioritized visit with a premium package of services for a fixed price. Each clinic may offer different services that are clearly outlined as “included services” with the pricing. These services may include transportation to and from your hotel, a translator to guide you through the process, basic laboratory work, among other services.
You should prepare just as if you were to visit the doctor at home. You will need to be dressed appropriately to go outside, to bring a list of all your medications and to be able to describe your symptoms and when they began.

Each clinic varies, depending on the specific clinic, there may be someone waiting to meet with you or you may need to check in at the front desk.

You should not have to wait more than about 15 minutes to see the doctor. While TripDoctor registered clinics agree to prioritize TripDoctor patients over other patients waiting in line to be seen, there may still be a wait time if, for example, the doctor is attending to a medical emergency when you arrive.

Please verify whether the clinic you are selecting offers such services. Each provider may offer different services which are highlighted in the section labeled “included services”.

Based on your situation, your doctor may require additional tests, medical services, or treatments for your diagnosis. While the cost of these are not included in the price, participating clinics are required to provide fair pricing and present all additional costs to you prior to ordering additional services.

Registering, using our site and search services, and accessing our customer concierge team is totally free!
In order to connect with a doctor, you will need to pay that doctor’s posted consult fee, which may differ depending on the type of appointment (video, house call or concierge clinic) and location. TripDoctor charges doctors a fee to connect to patients through our service. TripDoctor accepts most major credit and debit cards, and PayPal. Pricing covers the doctor’s time and TripDoctor services. Pricing does not include medications, additional testing, or additional treatments. All physicians will clearly communicate the cost of additional services or medications. Keep in mind that our prices are often less than what you would pay at an urgent care or ER and come with TripDoctor’s services and features.

At this time, we do not take insurance. Typical health insurance does not cover services out of the member's home country or area. However, certain emergency conditions may be reimbursed later under U.S. law. Contact your insurer for more information. If you have travel insurance or your health insurer will reimburse your care, TripDoctor will provide you with a visit note and receipt upon request.

At this time, we do not offer a subscription-based service. We want to offer a service that everyone can use and that they only have to pay for when they use it. If you think you’d like to see a subscription service in the future, contact us and let us know.

Please check the terms and conditions associated with your promotion code for any relevant restrictions. For example, some codes can only be used for a first visit. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out via email at support@tripdoctor.com or call us directly at 1 800 284 9678

We accept all major credit cards, such as: VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and PayPal.

TripDoctor does not store your card information after completing a transaction. We use one of the world’s largest 3rd party payment processors to ensure PCI compliance.

TripDoctor does not set pricing. In order to deliver the most value to customers, we allow our providers to set their own prices. TripDoctor users can see all the services and prices in a given region. We believe this market transparency helps keep prices fair and competitive.

Doctors are able to diagnose and provide treatment plans for many of the most common travel related illnesses. Doctors may also provide prescriptions when necessary and if legally permitted. Doctors may make recommendations for a follow-up appointment. Many of the doctors that provide video consults can also follow-up with a house call or priority clinic visit.

House Calls may be preferable to videocalls for issues such as minor cuts and wounds, sprains and strains, or dehydration. Doctors can also provide prescriptions when necessary. Some doctors may also provide additional medications, treatments, and resources for additional laboratory testing. Read the profile of each doctor to see what the doctor's house call service includes.

Each clinic may offer different services that are clearly outlined as “included services” with the pricing. TripDoctor’s platform does not cover all types of medical care. As a part of your appointment, it may become necessary to incur additional diagnostic work (e.g., laboratory testing, radiology), other medical services, or additional treatment/procedures. Billing for other services rendered outside of the initial appointment is exclusively to be arranged between the user and doctors. TripDoctor takes additional steps to ensure that the physicians on our platform adhere to fair and transparent pricing procedures for all future services.

TripDoctor does not guarantee prescriptions. It is up to the doctor to recommend the best treatment. TripDoctor participating physicians do not issue prescriptions for locally controlled substances (e.g., narcotics), non-therapeutic, and/or certain other drugs which may be harmful because of their potential for abuse.

Because the law governing prescriptions varies across countries and states, how prescriptions are administered will depend on your location and the type of medicine prescribed. Your doctor may provide you with an electronic list of recommended medications to bring to the pharmacy, submit a prescription electronically or by phone call to the pharmacy of your choice or provide a paper prescription to you. Prior to the end of your appointment, your doctor will tell you how this will happen.

TripDoctor is not a pharmacy and does not dispense prescription drugs

You can request a follow-up appointment with your previous doctor in your My Consults tab or by contacting our customer concierge. You may schedule at new appointment with any doctor at any time.

Yes, you can contact our customer concierge via 1 800 284 9678. Our staff can help you to set up a house call or priority clinic visit, which do not require a smartphone or computer.

This depends on your specific circumstances and privacy needs. While there are not absolute requirements for privacy, keep in mind that this may limit Doctor care. As such, if you do not have access to a computer or smartphone in a private area it is strongly recommended that you select a house call or priority clinic visit.

We currently support Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. If you experience any issues with the browsers listed, please contact our tech support team at 1 800 284 9678

If you have not enabled WIFI, then we strongly recommend you do so. To enable WIFI on most phones simply go to SETTINGS and then select WIFI. This can greatly improve the speed of your connection and quality of your experience. However, if you do not have access to WIFI, TripDoctor’s application is designed to work on 4G and LTE cellular systems. If your cellular data is limited, you can simply switch to “audio only” when connected with a doctor.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Below are some useful procedures that often help:

  1. Check that you are using a supported browser and device

  2. Restart your computer or smartphone

  3. Check your connection to ensure that you are connected to Wi-Fi for optimal connection. If you only have access to cellular data, it must be at least 4G or LTE

  4. Run a speed-test at: www.speedtest.net to ensure your connection meets our minimum requirements. You need a download speed of 3mbps or better, and an upload speed of 1.5mbps or better, in order to maintain a stable connection with our service.

  5. If your cellular or WIFI speed is too low for a video consult, you can switch to audio only to get a better audio signal

  6. If these troubleshooting steps do not solve your problem, please contact our customer concierge team via web chat or at
    1 800 284 9678 for assistance
